Firstly

Will the switch turn back on?

If the switch will not turn back on then the next thing to check will be your plug sockets. Most trip switch problems are actually caused by faulty appliances and NOT the wiring in your walls would you believe? As such, the first thing you should do is go around your home and unplug all the plugs from the plug sockets. It is important that you actually pull the plugs out and not just turn them off.

Now, try the switch again and see if it turns on? If it does then great, well done, the problem has been caused by an electrical appliance and not the wiring, plug things back in and turn them on one at a time to find the cause.

If the switch will NOT turn back on after step one has been completed then step 2 may be of some help.

Secondly

On your consumer unit trip switch there is normally an abbreviation of a few letters. The trip switch itself usually has a little button marked T, is double the width of the other switches and will have one of the following abbreviations….

RCD, RCB, RCCB, ELCB.

If this is the switch that has tripped then there may be an electrical fault on one of MANY different electrical circuits.

These double wide trip switches are usually responsible for controlling the smaller switches and as such we may need to do a bit of investigation to find out which one is the cause. So…..

1.    Turn off all the smaller switches, these may or may not be labelled sockets, lights cooker and so on. Make sure they are all in the DOWN or OFF position.
2.    Turn the RCD, RCB, RCCB or ELCB switch BACK ON
3.    One by one, with a few seconds in between, turn on the smaller switches. If the RCD, RCD, RCCB, ELCB trips again make note! The last switch that you turned on may be the responsible one for causing the nuisance tripping!
4.    Turn the last switch BACK OFF again.
5.    Turn the RCD, RCB, RCCB, ELCB back on and AVOIDING THE PROBLEM SWITCH turn the rest of the smaller switches on. Hopefully there should be power to most of your home now.
6.    Call me, to come and investigate the cause. 07521 736 230

What could be the cause of the problem?

Do not panic. Lots of people can be very worried when electrics start to play up, the problems are usually straightforward for an electrician to find and usually do not result in thousands of pounds of work. A lot of my customers immediately ask me if they need a rewire and its unlikely.

The truth is, there are a lot of reasons why a trip switch will trip:

  1. Faulty Socket
  2. Water in electrics
  3. Cable damage
  4. Badly installed light fitting
  5. Faulty Cooker or wiring
  6. Faulty appliance
  7. Rodent damage
  8. Overheating or overloading
  9. Outdoor Electrics
  10. Faulty trip switch

This list is not exhaustive and there can be other causes. If you have an issue with your TRIP SWITCH IN HAYDOCK then it is likely I will be able to solve this for you. As your local fault-finding electrician there are many different tests and investigative techniques that I can use to find the problem for you. Most of the work that I carry out is fault finding and restoration work after problems so finding trip switch problems is quick and straightforward in many cases.

What if the trip switch IS faulty?

This is one of the rarer occurrences but nevertheless it does occasionally happen. If the trip switch has just gone bad, failed, burnt out or stopped working then I can source a replacement for you quickly if your fuse box/consumer unit is new. For older consumer units, replacement parts depend greatly upon our stock levels of particular parts or the ability to source parts for you quickly. The older the consumer unit the more likely it is that parts are obsolete and no longer available off the shelf meaning that we have to rely on our store of obsolete components.

Occasionally when a trip switch is faulty and requires replacing it is necessary to replace the consumer unit itself with a new one. Regardless of the problems you have, I have solutions for you and will be able to quote for any restoration or repair works for you.

What happens if other parts are faulty in the fuse box?

I carry a number of spares for older units and in the unlikely event that I do not have the part immediately I can usually source one through my network of friendly colleagues. Various components failing may affect other components. In the event of a fire, melting or burning, it may be too dangerous to attempt replacing parts and a new unit may be the only answer but each case is different.

How Much Does a Faulty Trip Switch Problem Cost?

That depends on what is required and the cost for the parts. Typical emergency calls for faults of this nature can cost anywhere from £120 to £350*, however each job is different and there can be hidden issues that require repair. For further information on costs for typical jobs please check my costs page.  (*at time of writing and typical costs for faults of this nature)
